8 March 2018 UNWTO Secretary-General meets Germany’s Parliamentary State Secretary Mrs. Iris Gleicke at ITB Berlin
UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili met with Germany’s Parliamentary State Secretary Mrs. Iris Gleicke to discuss collaboration between Germany and UNWTO. Discussions focused on sustainability, seasonality, rural development and climate change. The Secretary-General stressed the importance of using Germany’s expertise and experience in sustainable development. He added that although Germany is known due to its automotive industry tourism is as important to the country’s GDP as the automotive sector.   Related links: Regional Programme for Europe
5 March 2018 UNWTO/Chimelong Initiative on Wildlife and Tourism launches Media Award
Madrid, Spain, 3 March 2018 - “To engage the media and to recognize the work of journalists in the coverage of wildlife and sustainable tourism.” This is the ultimate goal of the Media Award announced by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) on the occassion of Wildlife Day celebrated on 3 March. The UNWTO/Chimelong Initiative aims to promote the value of tourism for wildlife conservation and includes also training to tourism administrations and to media on the theme.
24 January 2018 Innovation and training on the agenda of UNWTO Secretary-General visit to Portugal
Innovation and training were at the centre of the official visit of Zurab Pololikashvili, the Secretary-General of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), to Portugal on 22-23 January. Following meetings with the Portuguese President, Prime Minister, Ministry of Economy and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as representatives from the private sector, a joint training and innovation action plan was agreed between UNWTO and Portugal. On the occasion, the Alentejo Sustainable Tourism Observatory joined the UNWTO International Network of Sustainable Tourism Observatories (INSTO). 
19 December 2017 A roadmap towards 2030: the legacy of the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development 2017
Participants from around the world joined the Official Closing ceremony of the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development 2017 at the Palace of Nations, in Geneva, Switzerland. The event reviewed the year´s main achievements and discussed the roadmap for advancing the contribution of tourism towards the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
18 December 2017 Botswana hosts the International Symposium and Annual Conference of the 10YFP Sustainable Tourism Programme (STP)
Kasane, capital of Chobe District in Botswana, hosted tourism stakeholders to exchange experiences and knowledge of innovative approaches to enhance tourism and conservation planning, financing and marketing. Under the theme “Empowering Tourism Destinations’ Sustainability through Innovation”, the 10YFP STP International Symposium and Annual Conference also discussed the role of the tourism sector in fighting climate change.
15 December 2017 UNWTO International Network of Sustainable Tourism Observatories annual meeting discusses how to measure tourism impacts at local level
UNWTO convened observatories from around the world to discuss advances in effectively monitoring sustainability in tourism at destination level. The 2017 Global International Network of Sustainable Tourism Observatories (INSTO) Meeting was held on the 13th  and 14th of December at UNWTO Headquarters in Madrid.
11 December 2017 UNWTO appoints First Lady of Iceland as Special Ambassador for Tourism and the Sustainable Development Goals
H.E. Ms. Eliza Jean Reid, First Lady of Iceland has been nominated as Special Ambassador for Tourism and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The appointment took place at the second UNWTO/UNESCO World Conference on Tourism and Culture, an official event of the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development 2017, being held in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman on 11 and 12 December. 
1 December 2017 Hello Kitty appointed as Special Ambassador of the International Year of Sustainable Tourism Development 2017
United Nations designated the year 2017 “International Year of Sustainable Tourism Development” and World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) (Headquarters in Madrid; Secretary General Dr. Taleb Rifai) plays a leading role to promote it. UNWTO and Sanrio signed an agreement that appoints Hello Kitty as Special Ambassador of the International Year.
29 November 2017 African tourism leaders debate the role of the sector as a tool for inclusive growth and community engagement
The Conference results in the Lusaka Declaration on Sustainable Tourism The potential of Tourism in poverty alleviation and to induce transformative change has been addressed in Lusaka, capital city of Zambia, in the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Conference on Promoting Sustainable Tourism, a Tool for Inclusive Growth and Community Engagement in Africa. The Conference, a flagship event of the Africa region for the celebration of the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development, took place last 16-18 November and was coordinated by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in cooperation with the Government of Zambia.

La efeméride se conmemora el 24 de octubre de cada año desde 1948 El 24 de octubre es uno de los hitos más relevantes de la historia de Naciones Unidas pues marca la entrada en vigor en 1945 de la Carta Fundacional. El acto de celebración del Día de Naciones Unidas ha tenido lugar en el madrileño Parque del Retiro y ha sido co-organizado por la representación del sistema en España, el Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores y Cooperación del Gobierno de España y el Ayuntamiento de Madrid.
